ABOUT THE LIBRARY
The Northfield Public Library began in 1856 with a reading room and a circulating library set up by the Lyceum Society. From those modest beginnings it has grown to a library of 12,320 square feet and a collection of about 83,000 items.
The library is a member of the SELCO regional library system. It serves a population of more than 31,000 in the northern portion of Rice County, Minn. The library is located in the heart of downtown Northfield and plays a vital role in preserving the history of Northfield.
COLLECTIONS
The local history collection includes books, atlases, plat maps, school yearbooks, several scrapbooks on local history, newspaper and census microfilm, clippings, family histories, and more. In addition to Northfield history, the collection covers surrounding areas and Rice County.
